Science-fiction has warped our expectations of artificial intelligence. No, there is no zombie apocalypse or alien invasion like we are lead to believe from films such as Ex Machina or Tron. In fact, AI has been slowly integrated into our everyday lives via smartphones, self-driving cars, social media and video games. However, within recruiting, it is used to source candidates. AI reads the CV and selects the candidates which are best suited to the role. Keep reading to find out how you can make your CV stand out!
AI applications use a combination of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML). The combination of these two elements allows AI to accurately read CVs, the shortcomings that they have and makes it clear how far technology has come.
What makes up AI?
Natural Language Programming is the ability of a computer program to understand human language as it is spoken. These algorithms can also identify how much experience and how senior your job role is by combining the skills and dates throughout your CV.
Machine Learning helps AI make more accurate matches. It learns from previous searches and can help AI be extremely accurate when reading your CV.
How to get recognised with AI
When looking through a CV, AI looks for skills, experience, dates, location and personal information. It sounds like common sense but the more often you include a skill and use clear dates, the higher chances are of getting your CV noticed by AI. It is a very complex process and it can understand billions of words and phrases.
So, how do you make sure that your CV gets noticed?
Make sure to focus your CV on the last 5 months’ worth of experience. This will help AI see recent promotions, job roles, industries and skills. Make sure you include the most relevant skills to the job role. For example, do you manage a team? Do you actively look for challenge? The list goes on!
You should also make sure to list keywords, sectors and phrases that you use on a regular basis. AI will try and find relevant keywords throughout your CV. As keywords are constantly changing, make sure you check the job description on employer’s websites, make a note of keywords and focus on both the role and industry. It can either make or break your job search.
Remember: don’t dwell on past experiences from over 5 years ago. Make sure your CV reflects your most relevant job role, industry and set of skills.
