Did you know the average hiring process takes 27.9 days?
One of the biggest struggles in todays employment market is the war for candidates and it’s a well-known fact that good talent doesn’t stay on the market for long. So, why then do we take so long to make hiring decisions?
In 27.9 days you could make four return trips to the moon and still have 4 days spare but according to research conducted by Glassdoor you could just about hire 1 employee in the same time!
Some of the factors that slow the process down are:
Larger organisations having multiple channels the CV must pass through before organising an interview. A typical example of the CV journey is CV submitted, HR screen, line manager reviews, back to HR then an interview request comes through
Insisting on an average of 3 rounds for an interview process with too much time between each stage
Searching for the “perfect” candidate and overlooking very capable and skilled applicants. The search continues in the hope of finding someone to tick every single item on the lengthy wish list only to discover there is no such thing as the “perfect” fit
Its imperative that organisations look to streamline their processes if they want to secure the best candidates. Here are some tips on how to do this:
Reduce the number of hoops a candidate must jump through. It might seem necessary to you in order to find the perfect fit and you might think if they don’t want to do all the steps they aren’t committed but in actual fact a longer process is costlier to you and it can more often than not drive good candidates away research done say’s that for every salaried employee recruited, the total cost of the recruitment process is 6-9 months salary for the employee. However some suggest it could be as much as double the salary.
Agree key milestones and put some time aside in your diary up front to interview candidates. If the right quality CVs don’t come through then you get your time back, if you like the CVs you already have time available to interview
Look for reasons why the person could do the job rather than why they can’t. Think about the future of your team, do they have additional skills that you could utilise further down the line? If so be flexible on your current requirements
