Manchester’s Ever-Growing Skyline

There is always something interesting and exciting going on in Manchester. Whether it is an international festival, a Premiership football match or a high-profile musician performing in one of the city’s many venues. The buzz of the city centre is contagious, and with the opening of new businesses every week, there is an urge for new places and locations to establish them.

Due to this, Manchester’s city centre skyline looks set to undergo a drastic change over the next few years. With work already beginning on several high-rise towers and skyscrapers, it is said that planning permission is to be given to a wide variety of locations around the city centre. And while many buildings are currently still at the design stage – they are expected to be brought before the council’s planning committee in the near future. Those which look set to be built include a skyscraper which will loom over Manchester’s current tallest building, Beetham Tower – as well as others which are of a similar size.

In total, there will be 18 high-rise buildings. Some of these include: A 41-storey skyscraper in Angel Meadow; Beetham Tower’s 40-storey twin and separate office block; The Axis Tower on Deansgate Locks and a 35-storey tower on Whitworth Street West. The majority of the remaining 18 buildings are aimed to be completed by the beginning of 2022.

The ambitious scheme will deliver approximately 10,000 new flats for the city centre, alongside a number of public squares, indoor tennis courts, swimming pools, spas, gyms and cinemas. The long-term aim for these projects is to boost economy within the city centre by attracting more people to locations which aren’t located directly in the centre. The scheme is said to be focusing on using locally sourced materials for all their structures which has gained a lot of local support.

Due to the vast amount of construction work that will be created and office work, employment levels within the city centre are expected to increase by 22,000 despite economic uncertainty following the vote for Brexit.
