British Airways owner, IAG, have signed a letter of intent to order 200 of the problematic Boeing 737 MAX planes. The deal is said to be worth $24 billion at list price and will put Boeing slightly ahead of its European rival, Airbus, at the world’s premier aviation event, Paris Air Show. This is a huge win for Boeing as even if IAG do not go through with their order, this is the most confidence that any airline has shown in the 737 MAX.
Boeing are now working on a software fix after the two deadly crashes involving the 737 MAX which in total, killed over 300 people. The most recent crash was an Ethiopian Airlines Flight that crashed only six minutes after take-off killing all 157 people onboard. The plane was only four months old at the time of the crash and in response, numerous aviation authorities from around the world grounded the 737 MAX, with many airlines following suit. CEO Wille Walsh, a former 737 pilot, wrote in his letter of intent that they are confident in the plane maker and that they are expecting the Boeing planes to return to service in the coming months.
This deal has caused a bit of controversy within the aviation industry due to a number of people saying that this deal trivialises the death of over 300 people and that they are trying to profit off of tragedy.
